Creating Effective Learning Environments in Early Years

What is this course?

This one-day course will help you to understand how children learn and how essential the indoor and outdoor environment is in enabling children to deepen their understanding and apply their skills. You will be supported to evaluate the purpose and context of your environment and to ensure you fully understand the purpose and importance of outside.

You will also look carefully at enhancing your environment to ensure you are meeting the needs of all children and enabling them all to make progress. You will explore the value and purpose of play and more fully understand the purpose of play in embedding learning.

What will I learn?

  • What ‘teach, practise, apply’ looks like in the classroom and outside;
  • How to use context and purpose, inside and outside, to trick children into learning, to bring learning to life and to hook children into applying the key skills we need them to use;
  • How to plan effectively to use all aspects of the environment to immerse children in exciting and meaningful learning.

Computing and Computational Thinking in the Curriculum

What is this course?

This full day course provides a range of practical activities for teaching computing across both key stage 1 and 2.  The day starts by exploring the use of  ‘unplugged’ activities to develop pupils’ computational thinking skills. The fit between computational thinking and programming is then explained as delegates take part in a mini computing project using the Crumble controller to make an interactive movie advert. Delegates will need a laptop with the Crumble software installed (Free here: http://redfernelectronics.co.uk/crumble-software/)
